Overview:
A general overview of polymers will be presented.  Topics covered will include: (1) a historical perspective of polymers; (2) polymer formation, structure and strengthening mechanisms; (3) polymer chemistry and nomenclature; (4) polymer processing; (5) testing and characterization of polymers; and (6) failure analysis.  In addition, the class includes a hands-on laboratory workshop covering many polymer test materials.

  • Anyone who works with nonmetallic materials from engineering to quality and purchasing
Suggested Pre-Requisite(s):
An understanding of metallic materials and/or an introductory materials science course would be beneficial to the student but not mandatory.

  • Understand the fundamental differences between metallic and nonmetallic materials.
  • Learn the structure and properties of polymers.
  • Learn the common applications of polymers.
  • Understand the methods of processing polymers.
  • Gain knowledge on the methods used to test and characterize polymers.
  • Understand the manner in which polymers fail.
  • Gain insight into fracture of polymers and polymer matrix composites.
  • Learn the basics of failure analysis and fractography of polymers and polymer matrix composites.

Instructor Biographies:

Mr. Ronald J. Parrington, P.E. FASM, is the President of IMR Test Labs, a full service materials testing laboratory. Ron is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with BS and MS degrees in Materials Engineering. He has over 25 years of experience in materials testing and failure analysis of metallic and nonmetallic materials, has presented and published numerous papers on failure analysis, teaches the ASM courses (Principles of Failure Analysis and Nonmetallic Materials Workshop), and is past chairman of the ASM International Failure Analysis Committee and the ASM Chapter Council.
