The advances made in Electronics Technology in the last 20 years have been remarkable. Electronic devices now pervade all aspects of modern life, from computers and cell phones to wireless equipment and medical devices. With the increase in sophistication of these devices has come an increase in complexity in their design and manufacture. However, this has also resulted in an increase in the number and complexity of possible failure mechanisms. At IMR, we have continued to expand our material and product knowledge of such systems, as well as the analytical techniques required to solve such complex problems. We are adept at identifying and solving problems including solder attach issues, corrosion, dendritic growth, PC Board delamination, plating, cracking, electrical overstress, and contamination.
A new challenge facing the Electronics Industry is the new RoHS Directive from the European Union restricting the levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, and certain brominated Fire Retardants. IMR has taken a leadership role in clarifying these regulations and in developing the best analytical techniques for analyzing electronic materials. These techniques allow us to accurately and efficiently characterize the levels of these substances in any type of material. No other lab knows more about RoHS testing!
