Lead Metallurgical Engineer

Lead Metallurgical Engineer

Manage all operations and activities of the Failure Analysis/Metallurgical Engineering (FAME) Department to meet customer expectations in a timely and cost effective manner. Perform independent work, guide the work of others, provide technical leadership and expertise, work with management, and interact with customers.

Location: Lansing, NY

Your Challenge:

  • Conduct high quality metallurgical testing evaluations and failure analyses demonstrating proficiency and expertise in utilization of a variety of techniques. Coordinate the input of other departments for overall testing and evaluation and IMR report requirements. Write failure analysis reports in an accurate and timely manner. Communicate results, answer questions and provide service to ensure positive customer relationships. Perform testing and tasks in support of other departments. Provide peer review of work and reports. Review and distribute incoming jobs and assure work completion as required. Perform all work in accordance with safe and proper procedures.
  • Contact customer, via phone, email or visit to review incoming failure jobs, prepare quotations, interpret customers' requirements; Interface with customers as necessary to assure that a high level of customer satisfaction is maintained. Conduct or assist in conducting customer tours, visits and audits.
  • Exhibit & maintain a high level of metallurgical skills and knowledge of material science. Keep abreast of new developments in the field and provide technical leadership to the lab. Serve as a resident expert and technical resource for others. Maintain professional visibility through involvement in professional societies and publication in technical journals.
  • Train other employees within and across departments on methods, procedures and other practices as required. Develop new methodologies, procedures and processes to enhance operations and work product.

Your Expertise:

  • At minimum Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or related field, Master's Preferred
  • Possession of or qualification to pursue P.E. or other professional licensing
  • At least 7-10 years of hands on metallurgical engineering and/or failure analysis experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with metallurgical tools, equipment, and instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in and knowledge of diverse range of specifications and methodologies
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Previous experience using an SEM-EDS, doing weld evaluations, and performing evaluations on aerospace alloys is an asset

Metallurgical Engineer

Independently perform high quality metallurgical evaluations and failure analyses to meet customer expectations in a timely and cost effective manner.

Location: Lansing, NY

Your Challenge:

  • Conduct high quality metallurgical testing evaluations demonstrating proficiency and expertise in utilization of a variety of techniques. Testing will include but not limited to grain size evaluations, weld evaluations, micro and macrostructure evaluations, thermal spray coating evaluations and aggressive machining evaluations. Perform testing and tasks in support of other departments. Ensure that results on datasheets are accurate. Provide peer review of work and reports as appropriate.
  • Conduct high quality routine failure analysis. Coordinate the results from other departments and assemble failure analysis reports in accurate and timely manner. Communicate results, answer questions and provide consultation as needed.
  • Contact customer, via phone, email or visit to review incoming metallurgical and failure jobs, prepare quotations, interpret customers' requirements; Interface with customers as necessary to assure that a high level of customer satisfaction is maintained.
  • Exhibit & maintain a high level of metallurgical skills and knowledge of material science. Keep abreast of new developments in the field and provide technical leadership to the lab. Serve as a resident expert and technical resource for others.

Your Expertise:

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or related field

Chemical Technician

Provide analytical support and perform high quality chemical analyses to meet customer expectations in a timely and cost effective manner. The position entails sample preparation, operation of instrumentation, and performing a variety of analytical tests. The chemical technician will also be responsible for keeping work areas clean and organized.

Your Challenge:

  • Perform mechanical and chemical sample preparations. Mechanical sample prep will include cutting, drilling and grinding of metal samples. Chemical sample prep will include mainly acid digestions of metal samples and dilutions.
  • Analyze samples using a variety of analytical instrumentation. Analytical instrumentation may include but are not limited to an oxygen/nitrogen analyzer, hydrogen analyzer, carbon/sulfur determinator, and particle size analyzer.
  • Perform typical gravimetric and volumetric tests. These tests include but are not limited to coating weights, densities, moisture content, ash content, sieve analysis, and titrations.
  • Perform work in accordance with proper work procedures and in a safe manner.
  • Complete work assignments on scheduled due dates and keep management informed of problems that affect workflow.
  • Assist in keeping work areas presentable. Additional emphasis will be placed on customer tours and audits.

Your Expertise:

  • High School or Equivalent required 
  • Diploma or Degree in related science (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Environmental studies) highly desired or 2+ years of equivalent work experience
  • Experience in a laboratory environment preferred 
  • Strong skills in math and science
  • Strong attention to detail with the aptitude to prioritize multiple deadlines 
  • Ability to accurately follow direct and detailed written and verbal instructions
