Tensile testing, also known as pull testing, is a standard test where a sample is placed in grips and subjected to controlled tension until it fails.  This provides valuable information about materials including ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and reduction in area.  This information also allows us to determine Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio.

IMR Test Labs offers tensile testing on metals, polymers, coatings, powdered metals, tubes, pipes, wire and fiber-reinforced composites.  We offer both uniaxial and biaxial testing.  

Our nonmetallics group, located at our Ithaca, NY lab, performs pull testing on polymers and composites in a climate controlled room to ASTM, ISO and manufacturer specifications.  We're fully equipped to execute compression testing of polymers, composites and elastomers.  Our concise reports include stress-strain diagrams with data on proportional and elastic limits, yield points and strength, and compressive strength- critical knowledge for decision making.

TENSILE TESTING OF METALS

We have tensile frames capable of testing up to 160,000 lbs. on a variety of sample types, including cast iron bars, metal wire, specialty metals, tubes and welded samples.  We offer special volume pricing for routine tensile testing work and our standard turnaround is three days or less.  IMR can machine raw material or even products down to the appropriate size.  

POLYMER TENSILE TESTING

Our Ithaca, NY location offers tensile testing of polymers from (-240ºF to 660ºF). Our polymer lab is climate controlled and can condition your specimens prior to testing.  Specimens can be sent in sheet form or product form, and will be machined to the desired specification.  IMR offers the ability to measure modulus of elasticity, via an array of available extensometers, as well as the ability to measure Poisson’s ratio using strain gages.  

COMPOSITE TENSILE TESTING

Our Ithaca, NY lab offers a variety of composite tensile testing services, including ASTM D 3039, flatwise, hoop and cruciform tensile testing, climbing drum peel and more. IMR routinely uses strain gages for measurements on composites, and can provide all raw data in Excel tables for data analysis.  Tabbing is done in-house on all composite tensiles, as well as all machining.  

COATING TENSILE / BOND STRENGTH TESTING

All of our labs offer accredited bond strength tensile testing for coatings to specification ASTM C633. Our Ithaca, NY location offers a standard one-day turnaround on this service and all labs offer special pricing for volume work.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE TENSILE TESTING (ETT/HTT)

Our Portland laboratory offers high temperature tensile testing of metals in temperatures up to 2100ºF. Elevated temperature testing predicts how materials will perform under in-service conditions that include high heat.
